TTYD Omega v0.9 (8/18/24)
for Paper Mario TTYD (Switch)
by freakinasheet

DESCRIPTION

TTYD getting a remake at all was miraculous, but its new script... wasn't, to put it lightly. While Intelligent Systems and Treehouse did fix a few things, most of the remake's script edits consist of pointless sensitivity changes and countless lines being rewritten, or even removed in some cases! On top of that, their newly added prose tends to stick out like a sore thumb. For a game with such beloved writing, it's a shame that its script was handled so poorly.

TTYD Omega is a full script restoration mod that aims to fix this. Over the last few months, I've gone through all of the game's text files, compared them line-by-line to the Gamecube version, and manually restored as much of the 2004 English script as possible (with a few small caveats). It's not perfect, but I've strived to make it as faithful as possible, and I hope at least some will see it as the definitive way to experience the remake.

Additionally, Omega restores a few things from the original Japanese version that the remake left out - Chuckola Cola being Vintage Red, Peeka and Lahla (optionally) mentioning their bunny ears, and some other stuff listed below. Some of the dialogue I used for this was taken from Griscuit's TTYD+ mod (https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3092/) with permission, so I give them full credit and thanks for that.

WHY "0.9"? IS THE MOD NOT DONE YET?!?

The core mod's basically finished: my first pass of the script is done, but a lot of it is untested, there may be a line or two I missed during the restoration process, and there's still a few things I'd like to add, so the version number isn't 1.0 yet. I've opted to release it slightly earlier than I otherwise would because this mod's already taken too long to make, and I think most people will be content with it in its current state. Feel free to install Omega and play through the game normally, but expect some text bugs here and there. If you find any issues, leave a comment or let me know at one of the profiles listed under "Contact Info". I doubt I'll be able to find every mistake on my own!

COMPATIBILITY NOTES

Omega only covers the game's US English script; I'd be happy to give pointers to someone working on another language, but there are changes exclusive to said languages (like the Koopie Koo line mentioned here: https://gamebanana.com/mods/515702), and I'm already tired enough from working on one language as-is...

Omega SHOULD work with all versions of the game, but I'm not 100% sure. The text files (.msbts) should be okay, since I started working on this prior to 1.0.1 and everything still works, but I'm not sure about the textures folder (aka "ui") yet, so if the game crashes, try deleting that?

Omega edits almost every text file (.msbt) in the game, so it is by definition INCOMPATIBLE with any other mod that edits the game's dialogue in any way. This is something else I wouldn't mind working with people on - feel free to make compatibility patches - but I can't think of any solution other than fixing any conflicts yourself using MSBTConverter, a file comparison tool, and a text editor. (I also edited a few UI texture files, but this should be less of an issue...)

Omega was primarily tested in the last official build of Yuzu (EA 4176), but it also seems to work fine in Ryujinx (1.1.1375). I don't have access to a real Switch to test this on, but I assume it'll work fine on original hardware... hopefully.

SUBMOD NOTES

You may have noticed there are multiple folders with numbered prefixes like "00": I knew there were a few details not everyone would want in their game, so I've tried including them as extra submods that you can install on top of the base mod if you want. Here's what each one does:

Bunny Boos - Makes Peeka and Lahla call themselves bunny Boos like in the 2004 Japanese version: this is intended for use with PotatoMuffin's Peeka & Lahla Bunny Ear Restoration mod (https://gamebanana.com/mods/517624), so please make sure you have that installed before using this.
Hooktail Hates Crickets - Makes Hooktail afraid of crickets instead of frogs, as she was in the 2004 US release. (The associated Attack FX badge still sounds like a frog... for now, at least.)
Vivian (US 2004) - Restores all Vivian-related lines from the 2004 US version of TTYD, and renames the Three Shadows to the Shadow Sirens.
Vivian (JP 2004) - Attempts to faithfully restore Vivian's more ambiguous otokonoko portrayal from the 2004 Japanese release of TTYD, and renames the Three Shadows to the Shadow Trio.

And since I know people will want extra clarification on Vivian - both of their major scenes are unchanged if you only install the base mod. If you want a different interpretation of Vivian, simply install one of the Vivian submods listed above (but not both at the same time), and you should be good to go.

INSTALLATION

BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE: install NatalieWhatever's Text Always Skippable mod (https://gamebanana.com/mods/516121)! It isn't technically required, but I developed Omega with this mod installed, and I can't imagine playing TTYD on Switch without text skipping. Do keep in mind that Natalie's mod needs to be updated every time the game gets patched, so make sure the version you're using matches your currently installed patch.

I've already mentioned this, but you should also install PotatoMuffin's Peeka & Lahla bunny ears mod (https://gamebanana.com/mods/517624) before using Omega's Bunny Boos submod.

Additionally, there are some other GC-inspired mods on Gamebanana you should probably install alongside Omega:

- Toad Chalk Outline Restoration (https://gamebanana.com/mods/517864)
- TTYD/SPM Mario Face (https://gamebanana.com/mods/520080) or Classic Front-Facing Mario (https://gamebanana.com/mods/518113) (I'm not sure which one is better yet)
- Gamecube Colored Good/Great/Etc. Text (https://gamebanana.com/mods/519063)

I also recommend Disable SSR/AA (https://gamebanana.com/mods/515567) and Disabled Sharpening And Color Filter (https://gamebanana.com/mods/516830) to mitigate some of the remake's more questionable visual changes, although this is subjective, of course.

With that out of the way, let's move onto actually installing Omega itself...

RYUJINX:
- Right click on TTYD in Ryujinx and select "Open Mods Directory" (don't use "Manage Mods" for installation)
- Open "00 - Base Mod" and drag the "TTYD Omega" folder into the "Ryujinx\mods\contents\0100ecd018ebe000" folder that Ryujinx opened for you
- Right click on TTYD again, select "Manage Mods", make sure TTYD Omega and all of your other mods are enabled, and hit "Save"
- If you're using (https://gamebanana.com/mods/517624): Open "01 - Bunny Boos", take the "TTYD Omega" folder that's inside, drag and drop it on top of the TTYD Omega folder you installed previously, and merge + replace/overwrite all folders and files when asked
- Repeat for any other submods you want to use (only pick ONE Vivian folder, 03 or 03.1, or else you'll have a mismatched installation)

YUZU:
- Right click on TTYD in Yuzu and select "Open Mod Data Location"
- Open "00 - Base Mod" and drag the "TTYD Omega" folder into the "yuzu\load\0100ECD018EBE000\" folder that Yuzu opened for you
- Right click on TTYD again, select "Properties", make sure TTYD Omega and all of your other mods are enabled under "Add-Ons", and hit "OK"

ORIGINAL SWITCH HARDWARE:
- I don't know! If you know how to install romfs mods with Atmosphere then you can probably follow the steps listed above, but again, Omega is untested on the Switch and I don't have access to one, so unfortunately, I can't help you.

If your game says "[TTYD OMEGA v0.9]" at the bottom of the title screen, then everything *should* be working fine. Have fun!

WHAT WAS CHANGED?

Before I release 1.0, I'd like to compile a more detailed changelog that lists all of Treehouse's script changes and the edits my mod makes... but that'll be excruciating, so here's a ""shorter"" list in the meantime:

- Restored all instances of characters using mental health-related insults ("crazy", "nuts", "insane", "loon", "psycho", etc.)
- Restored all mentions of a character's body weight/dieting ("I order you to do some sit-ups, Tubby", "Eat a sandwich, skinny!", etc.)
- Restored all instances of characters either insulting women, or outwardly crushing on them (Jolene being called "Queen Nag", Don Pianta calling Peach a "skirt", King K crushing on "shorties" in the Glitz Pit, etc.)
- Bowser and Crump both say "airhead" again (and no, "lunkhead" isn't as funny)
- Restored all uses of words like "bummer", "lame", "dork", "spook", etc.
- Restored a few uses of characters saying "he or she" instead of "they" (which coincidentally fixed a new typo)
- Revised the script's punctuation so it matches the original (restored <3 and star symbols, characters use ! marks again, digits are used more often, etc.)
- Fixed a few typos Treehouse added (my favorite being "Welcome to the the Great Tree!")
- Characters have their names mentioned in RDM emails (although there were several other email-related changes I reverted)
- Reverted nearly all changes made to the Beldam and Peach intro scene (Beldam still picks up the box on her own, sadly)
- Most item names + descriptions are now the same as the 2004 US version, including all Shroom items (Life Shrooms, etc.) (Some descriptions have been altered to fix inaccuracies, but they should match the OG descriptions more closely)
- Made the UI text match the US Gamecube release as closely as possible (including "CLEARED!" -> "END OF CHAPTER")
- Changed the names of a few locations ("Rogueport Underground" -> "Rogueport Sewers", "Palace of Shadow Tower" -> "Riddle Tower", etc.) and reverted all map description changes
- Goombella's location, enemy and NPC tattles have all been restored (I adjusted multiple partner hints too, but I still need to go over them again)
- Fully restored the first scene with Crump and Goombella (he doesn't call her a "nosy book nerd", Goombella acts like you know what Star Points are, etc.)
- Goombella says "To find the treasure of yore..." instead of Frankly
- Goombella doesn't call herself a junior until the first Frankly scene, like in the original
- Frankly and Four-Eyes say "In front of the TV!", not "In front of the screen!"
- Readded the now-infamous Goomba catcalling scene in Rogueport Sewers
- Wonky's tales have been restored ("People get kidnapped, whatever", etc.), except for the Z button one
- Dazzle now accuses Mario of trying to swindle him (and he says "So...LAME!" again)
- Merlee is called a "fortune-teller" sometimes again, and her spells are occasionally called a "curse"
- The majority of Merluvlee's predictions should be restored/reverted
- In general, all shopkeeper + innkeeper text should match the original more closely now (however, they changed the way shops work, so it's not easy to cleanly restore everything)
- Reverted changes made to Grifty's stories ("The stars were scattered across the land" -> "One of these stars was placed in each country")
- All partner and black chest tutorials should also be more similar to the original script (this is another case where I couldn't always restore the old script)
- Dupree has all of his extremely stereotypical French lines restored
- Restored the original "Quirk Quiz" quiz names and the Mr. Softener + Fire Flower question
- Kroop wants to smack kids instead of giving them a "good, stern finger-wagging"
- The Sun and Moon Stones are called "Stone Keys"
- Koops tells Mario "you can say no" before asking to join his party
- Kolorado's father's letter warns you "not to give in to your kinder nature"
- Restored all of Hooktail's omitted dialogue ("strange-garbed one", "People pay good money to do this", etc.)
- Hooktail is referred to as "it" until Gloomtail calls her his sister in Chapter 8
- Reverted several changes made in Koops and Koopley's reunion scene (Koopley isn't stunned by Hooktail's feet, Koops says they thought his "game was over", etc.)
- Goombella once again calls Mowz a "floozy" several times
- Goombella and Koops no longer imply that Flurrie might be out of her house
- Bowser says living with a silent princess might even "have its perks"
- Mr. Hoggle sounds like a stereotypical Chinese man again instead of being British(?)
- All of the Glitz Pit security guards have their unique tattles restored
- All of King K's lines were restored, including him using stereotypical 90s slang like "dog" and saying Master Crash has "speech issues"
- Grubba says he has a date with a "cute little chickadee"
- Rawk Hawk is called "The Feral Nuclear Reactor"
- The Twilight Town shopkeeper's wife says "boys will be boys"
- Fixed the Twilight Town shopkeeper and Dupree having their lines swapped while outside
- Jerry is traumatized by seeing Luigi dressed as a bride, not his clumsiness in stilettos
- Restored all of the lines for Goom Goom's trouble, including him asking for a Goomba gal that's "petite"
- Scarlette's "deathbed" is mentioned, and the Keelhaul Key crew acknowledges that Bobbery might be dead rather than dancing around it (they left most death mentions alone, but not here?)
- Cortez's lines were restored and he says words like "amigo" again
- TEC explicitly tells Peach to take off her dress before drinking the invisibility potion
- Zip Toad only signs autographs "for chicks"
- Poshley Heights is for the rich *and* famous, not just the wealthy (I have no idea why this was changed)
- Toadia says "he's so much like Luigi, it's creepy!" instead of making a random "Lie-igi" pun
- Fahr Outpost Bob-ombs say "da" and "nyet" like Russians again
- Bobbery isn't as strongly implied to have visited Fahr Outpost before, like in the original
- The Fahr Outpost cannon is no longer named "Big Bob"
- In her first Moon tattle, Goombella specifies there was a Goomba on the Moon in '69
- Beldam says Frankly's "sleeping off a nasty bump on the head"
- The Riddle Tower's riddles now match the original (no one knows what order they're supposed to be in, so I went with the Mario Wiki's version)
- The Shadow Queen says Mario and his party "do not appear to possess power" rather than saying "they possess some power and may have a modicum of use"
- Peach says she should "behave more like a princess" in the epilogue

There are plenty of fixes and changes I haven't listed here yet, but I think you get the gist by now...

2004 JP-specific changes:
- Chuckola Cola is "Vintage Red"
- All mentions of cola were altered or removed (Podley and Herb T. just run bars, not "cola bars")
- During the cannon sequence in Ch7, a Bob-omb says "Stop touching my butt!"
- Pa-Patch makes a fart sound instead of saying "Flavio's armpit!" in Ch5
- Goombella implies that Red Bones are stained with blood when tattling them
- Pennington is called the "Sanctum Keeper" (I thought this was a good compromise between "Sanctum Priest" and "Sanctum Manager")
- "Rally Wink" and "Lip Lock" are called "Rally Kiss" and "Sexy Kiss", respectively
- "Pickle Star" was changed back to "Luigi's Undies" in the 65th Super Fun Quirk Quiz
- Bunny Boos: Peeka and Lahla call themselves bunnies, not kitties
- Vivian (JP 2004): Vivian is depicted as a more ambiguous feminine male, and the "Three Shadows" are called the "Shadow Trio"

2004 US-specific submods:
- Hooktail Hates Crickets: Hooktail is afraid of crickets, not frogs
- Vivian (US 2004): Vivian is depicted as she was in the 2004 US localization, with the "Three Shadows" being called the "Shadow Sirens"

TL;DR - if it's listed here on the Mario Wiki's TTYD remake page (https://www.mariowiki.com/Paper_Mario:_The_Thousand-Year_Door_(Nintendo_Switch)#Text_and_localization_changes), then I've probably fixed it, in addition to multiple changes they likely haven't added yet. Remember that this is still a *condensed* list and that I plan on documenting every single change; when I said I went over the entire script, I wasn't kidding...

WHAT "CAVEATS"?

- Some lines were removed from the remake, like your partners' reaction after escaping the spike trap room in Hooktail Castle. I've tried to work around this, but I don't know how to add completely new dialogue yet, so a few lines are still missing...
- Some cutscenes were altered in a way where restoring old lines wouldn't make sense, which I also attempted to work around.
- I didn't restore obvious errors from the old US localization, so fixes like the PM64 references being readded and Dark Lakitus not throwing "pipes" are intact.
- This mod doesn't keep everything from the Japanese script; Hooktail being female isn't mentioned until Chapter 8, Freddy is still "Gloomer", etc.
- There are a few things I'd like to add (the N grafitti in Rogueport, Mario's arm salute, etc.) that I haven't figured out how to restore yet.
- I wanted to add the new logo I put together in-game, but it crashes Ryujinx (which is a known issue), so I've left it out for now.
- I touched up a lot of dialogue that was newly added for the remake (Mush, Whacka, etc.) since I felt it didn't mesh well with the OG script. I might reconsider this, but I'm hoping it'll be seen as an improvement.

HOW DID YOU MAKE THIS?

I used MSBTConverter (https://github.com/KillzXGaming/MSBTConverter/) to convert the game's .msbt files into clean .yaml files (and vice versa), Notepad++ to edit said .yaml files, and WinMerge to compare my edited files with the originals. Editing this game's dialogue isn't too bad once you learn how the tag system works, and I wouldn't say this project was difficult, just tedious - I'd like to write a text editing tutorial in the future, but it seems like newer .msbt editors are being developed, so we'll see...

For most of the restored Japanese elements (including Vivian), I used TTYD+ and sites like TCRF as a basis, and for any lines I was even slightly unsure about, I doublechecked the original 2004 JP script files from the GC version and translated them online (I used ChatGPT as a reference for the most part - I'm not happy about it, but almost every other free option produced gibberish in comparison). The stuff I restored should be a fairly accurate representation of the original Japanese script overall, although I also tried to maintain the English localization's tone, and I don't actually know Japanese, so there's only so much I can do. ;_;

BUT WHY DO ALL THIS?!?1/1

Short answer: Because I can lol

Longer answer: TTYD is one of my favorite games ever, and regardless of your take on the remake's text changes, IntSys and Nintendo changed far more of the script than most people think. I was disappointed by this, and since MSBTConverter was released shortly after the remake, I decided to take on restoring the original script myself. Was it worth it? I guess, but I'll let you be the judge of that :D

WHY IS IT CALLED "OMEGA"?

Because I wanted a name shorter than "2004 Script Restoration" that sounded as pretentious as possible.

PERMISSIONS

Do whatever you want, just please credit me, or at the very least, don't act like you created this yourself. I think the default Creative Commons license on Gamebanana should cover everything?
